How to choose your wedding gown

Ever wondered how to choose that perfect wedding gown for your big day? You may have a vision in your mind but that vision may not always work out for you because of several factors such as your build and your skin colour. So what to do? Let's hear it from Vivian a local designer of beautiful wedding gowns and dresses!

There are so many designs of gowns out there, how does one choose the perfect wedding gown for one's wedding day, especially when one is on a tight budget?

There are always 3 key factors to choose a gown that is perfectly for you: cutting, color and style. A lot of my customers tend to focus on details first when they choose their gowns, they would say: I like this kind of lace, or I like the small ruffles over waist, etc etc. There’s nothing wrong about attending to details, but not before we settle our key factors – again, cutting, color and style. Cutting is the most important factor, no matter how nice a gown looks, it needs to look nice when it’s on you!

Know the basics of cutting: ball gown, empire, princess, A-line, mermaid, etc, and how each cutting flatter (or vice versa) different body shape, is the 1st home work to do before you try on your first gown. Color also plays a key role, although most traditionally a western wedding gown will be white, there are different color tones of white, and also other light colors like champagne and lilac.

Always choose the one that is most suitable to your skin tone, then consider whatever color theme you might have. Wedding gowns can be in a lot different styles, it’s created from the first thought of design, by careful choice and combination of fabric, cutting, and details such as neckline and embellishment. Think this through before your shopping for gown: do you like classic, romantic or a funky and non-conventional gown? Which sounds more you?

What are some of the bridal fashion dos and don'ts?

Here are some of my thoughts:

DON’T: choose a gown that others all like but you do not.

Do: take into consideration of relatives and friends’ opinion, but you still have to feel pretty when you are in the gown. It’s all about how YOU feel! A bride who feels pretty will look pretty.

DON’T: always try to match “same color” for your gown, your bridesmaid’s gown and the groom’s suit.

Do: it’s always easier to match details then match the whole thing, plus due to fabric difference, there will almost always be color tone differences anyway.

Plus, you do not have to choose the same color to satisfy your theme, check out a color wheel, where you can always choose adjacent colors or opposite colors!

DON”T: wear a gown that is not suitable for the venue or style of the wedding.

Do: choose your gown after you choose your wedding venue, and make sure you know if you like a formal, a casual or a party wedding first.

DON”T: this is a tip that most people in the wedding business won’t really give – don’t get too carried away by a gown! Always remember to be happy in the whole process,

There might occasionally be things that go out of your expectation, as life always is, but be confident that you WILL be pretty on the day if you are happy!

Do: relax, be easy and happy in the shopping process! J

Could you tell us about some latest trends in bridal fashion and an example of a timeless classic that is a favourite among brides?

Bridal fashion does really goes and comes back again, elaborate lace fabric and carefully managed appliqués are where the trend is currently going.

However, A simple cut A-line gown that is low-key but brings out the most elegance is always classic.
